Count words, characters, sentences and estimate reading time directly in your browser.
All analysis runs locally in your browser. Text is not sent to an external API by this tool.
How to use the word counter and reading time tool
Paste or type text and choose a reading speed. The tool counts words, characters and sentences and estimates reading time entirely in your browser.
Reading time formula
Estimated reading time = Word count / reading speed in words per minute.
Example: a 1,000-word article
At 225 words per minute, a 1,000-word article has an estimated reading time of about 4 minutes 27 seconds.
Planning examples
These examples are mathematical scenarios designed to help with planning. They are not claims about typical market performance.
| Word count | 200 wpm | 225 wpm | 250 wpm | 300 wpm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500 | 2.5 min | 2.2 min | 2 min | 1.7 min |
| 1,000 | 5 min | 4.4 min | 4 min | 3.3 min |
| 1,500 | 7.5 min | 6.7 min | 6 min | 5 min |
| 2,000 | 10 min | 8.9 min | 8 min | 6.7 min |
Why reading time is only an estimate
Reading speed changes with language, complexity, familiarity and whether users scan or read closely. Use the result as a content UX estimate rather than a quality target.
