South Africa beat DR Congo on penalties to win AFCON 2023 Bronze

In a thrilling match at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, the Bafana Bafana of South Africa secured a remarkable victory against DR Congo, clinching the Bronze medal after a dramatic 6-5 triumph in the penalty shootout.

The intense encounter concluded with a goalless scoreline after 90 minutes, marking a unique occurrence in AFCON as there was no extra time; instead, the match seamlessly transitioned into a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.

South Africa’s goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, emerged as the hero by making two crucial saves during the penalty kicks, ultimately paving the way for their historic Bronze medal win.

Throughout the regular play, both teams showcased moments of brilliance and missed opportunities. In the 51st minute, Simon Banza narrowly missed the target with a well-placed shot that sailed just wide of the right post. Silas had his chance in the 66th minute, controlling a rebound inside the box, but his shot narrowly missed the left post.

Chancel Mbemba found himself in a promising position in the 76th minute after a rebound, but his attempt soared high over the crossbar. As the tension escalated, DR Congo had a golden opportunity in the 90th minute when Fiston Mayele received a cross in the box. Despite finding space for a shot, Mayele’s effort was imprecise and went wide off the right post, sealing South Africa’s victory in a nail-biting contest.
