During the Middle Ages in Europe, eel was a popular Christmas dish consumed across the continent. In Spain, it was customary to include eel in Christmas meals. Italy showcased a variety of eel preparations, with different regions favoring distinct cooking methods. Notably, eel held significance among the seven fish dishes traditionally served on Christmas Eve, known as the “pranza di Natale.”
In the nineteenth century, the rivers and streams of Poona (now Pune) in India were abundant with fish. From mid-June, when the southwest monsoon arrived, until the end of October, the water bodies swelled. As the rains ceased, the waters gradually receded, forming pools interconnected by gently flowing streams by March. Some of these pools were extensive, deep, and rocky, providing secure habitats for fish.
