Olympic breaker Raygun has become a hot topic after receiving a zero score during the debut of breakdancing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The breaker, real name Rachael Gunn, went viral following her performance, which many online labeled as “hilariously ridiculous.” But what really led to the zero score?

Breakdancing, also known as “breaking,” was officially added to the Olympic roster for the Paris Games, making history as one of the most unique and exciting new sports to watch. However, Raygun’s performance stood out for reasons other than athletic excellence. Despite her efforts, she failed to score any points in any of the three bouts she participated in.

Breakdancing Judging Criteria

The judging panel scores Olympic breakdancers on six key criteria: creativity, personality, technique, variety, performativity, and musicality. Unfortunately, Raygun didn’t earn a single point in any of these categories. This outcome has led to significant trolling on social media, with many critics questioning her place in the competition.

Judge’s Perspective on Raygun’s Performance

Breakdancing judge MGbility has expressed sympathy for Raygun while shedding light on why she received a zero score. Speaking with News Corp, MGbility stated, “I feel personally very sorry. The breaking and hip-hop community stands behind her. She was just trying to bring something new, something original that represents her country.”

The judge went on to explain that while Raygun’s performance was creative, it simply didn’t meet the level of her competitors. “Her level was maybe not as high as the other competitors,” MGbility added. “We’re using a comparative judging system. Her competitors were just better, but it doesn’t mean that she did really bad. She did her best.”

The Spirit of Breakdancing

MGbility emphasized that breaking is about originality and innovation, bringing something fresh from one’s culture or region. Raygun, who drew inspiration from the movements of animals like kangaroos, was trying to contribute something unique to the competition. “For breaking, when you look for innovations or originality, you always search outside of dancing—martial arts, how animals move, anything.”

Raygun herself acknowledged the challenges she faced in the competition. After the event, she told reporters, “I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best—their power moves. What I bring is creativity.”

More Than Just a Dancer

In addition to being a breakdancer, Raygun is also a university lecturer at Macquarie University, holding a Ph.D. in cultural studies. Her background adds an intellectual dimension to her artistry, which she sought to showcase at the Olympics.

Controversy Over Uniform Choices

Beyond her performance, Raygun attracted attention for her choice of attire. While the International Olympic Committee allowed breakdancers to wear custom uniforms, Raygun was the only athlete who wore a tracksuit representing her country. She later addressed the criticism on Instagram, posting, “Looking forward to the same level of scrutiny on what the b-boys wear tomorrow.”
