The outbreak, which was officially declared just days ago, has seen 26 confirmed cases so far. The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued warnings, advising against unnecessary travel to affected areas but has stopped short of imposing any official travel or trade restrictions with Rwanda. Marburg virus, much like Ebola, is believed to originate in fruit bats and spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids from infected individuals. Contaminated surfaces, such as bed sheets and medical equipment, also pose significant risks of transmission. Without proper treatment, the virus can be fatal in up to 88% of cases.
Rwanda, a central African country, declared the outbreak last Friday. By the next day, six deaths were reported, with the toll now reaching eight. Authorities are urging the public to avoid physical contact to slow the spread of the virus, which has particularly affected healthcare workers in six of the country’s 30 districts.
Health officials have identified around 300 individuals who came into contact with confirmed cases. Some of these contacts have been placed in isolation facilities as a precautionary measure. With the virus spreading among healthcare workers, the concern for broader restrictions, including a potential Marburg virus travel ban, is growing.
