Video Released in Domestic Assault Case of Former Dodgers Pitcher Julio Urías

A video has emerged that could mark the end of Julio Urías’ career in Major League Baseball. The former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher was involved in a violent domestic incident last September, and new footage provides an unsettling look at the altercation that led to his arrest.

The 72-second clip, recorded by a bystander and obtained by the LA Times in collaboration with the California Highway Patrol, shows Urías confronting two women in a parking lot outside BMO Stadium in downtown Los Angeles after an LAFC soccer match. In the video, Urías appears to grab one woman, believed to be his wife, and slam her against a fence. Multiple bystanders can be seen rushing to stop the attack as Urías yells profanities in Spanish and takes a swing at the woman.

Urías was arrested following the incident, and the video footage closely matches the initial police report from that day. He later pled no contest to a misdemeanor domestic battery charge and received a sentence of 36 months of probation. In addition, he was ordered to complete a domestic violence counseling program and fulfill other legal conditions.

The Dodgers, in response to Urías’ arrest, placed him on administrative leave, and he has not played professionally since. Urías, who was once considered a promising pitcher with a bright future in MLB, is now a free agent, with his future in baseball uncertain.

Major League Baseball (MLB) has opened an independent investigation but has not yet commented publicly on the newly released video. Under the league’s domestic violence policy, players found guilty of such offenses can face suspension, with decisions heavily influenced by video evidence like the one recently made public. This incident marks the second time Urías has faced domestic violence allegations; in 2019, he was also arrested for a similar charge but was allowed to return to play following a brief suspension and completed legal requirements.

Legal experts suggest that the severity of the incident, coupled with the video evidence, could result in Urías being permanently barred from playing in MLB. According to attorney Mark Geragos, who has handled high-profile sports cases, “Video evidence carries significant weight in disciplinary hearings, especially in a public league like MLB, where the organization needs to maintain its reputation.”

Public opinion appears to be turning decisively against Urías as well. On social media, many fans are calling for him to be permanently banned from the league, arguing that there is no place for individuals involved in domestic violence in professional sports.

MLB has strict domestic violence policies, and several players have faced lengthy suspensions in the past for similar incidents. For example, former Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán was suspended for 81 games following a domestic violence incident in 2019, and Addison Russell, formerly of the Chicago Cubs, received a 40-game suspension. Such precedents could influence the decision in Urías’ case, particularly with video evidence now in play.

Domestic violence remains a pervasive issue in professional sports, and advocacy groups are increasingly calling for more stringent policies. In a statement, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence said, “Leagues like MLB have a responsibility to take strong stances against domestic violence to set a precedent for players and fans alike. Allowing players who commit such acts to return sends the wrong message.”

As MLB’s investigation continues, Urías’ future in the sport hangs in the balance. While some fans and analysts believe he could still find a place in professional baseball after serving a suspension, others argue that the league should take a stand and remove him from the game permanently.
