A woman from Fulham, west London, named Linda De Sousa Abreu, aged 30, has been charged with misconduct in public office following the circulation of a social media video allegedly depicting a prison staff member engaged in sexual activity with an inmate at HMP Wandsworth. The Metropolitan Police initiated an investigation after being alerted to the video on Friday.

According to the Met, Ms. De Sousa Abreu is scheduled to appear in custody at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Monday. The incident comes in the wake of an “urgent notification” issued by chief inspector of prisons Charlie Taylor in May, highlighting severe issues such as overcrowding, vermin infestations, and escalating violence among inmates at HMP Wandsworth.

As of June 2023, Ministry of Justice statistics cited by the House of Commons Library indicated that HMP Wandsworth was operating at 163% of its Certified Normal Accommodation capacity. The prison, located in south-west London and established in 1851, currently houses over 1,500 inmates.
