Turkey-Syria earthquake: More than 4,800 dead

Rescue teams battle heavy rain and snow as they race against the clock to find survivors of a devastating earthquake in southeastern Turkey.

More than 4,800 people were killed and 15,000 injured across the Turkish-Syrian border when the quake hit early Monday morning.

The World Health Organization has warned that the death toll could rise dramatically as rescue teams find more victims.

As night falls, rescue teams intensify their search for survivors.

Many people in the affected areas were too scared to return to their buildings. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake at 04:00:

(17 GMT) on Monday at a depth of 17.9 km (11 miles) near the city of Gaziantep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the magnitude 7.8 quake was 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) east of Nurdagi, Gaziantep Province, Turkey, at a depth of 24.1 kilometers (14.9 miles).

A series of aftershocks echo throughout the day. A large earthquake with a maximum magnitude of 7.5 hit Turkey about nine hours after the first, according to the USGS. This aftershock occurred about 95 kilometers (59 miles) north of the original tremor.

Video from the site in Turkey shows the sun setting over rows of collapsed buildings, some of them weather-beaten apartments, with people standing beside them in the freezing cold. They were waiting for help.
