Prisoner Went Viral For Exposing Soft Life In South African Prison

Zimbabwean Prisoner’s Viral Video Sparks Outrage in South African Correctional Facility

In a recent viral video, Zimbabwean inmate Bornface Banks has stirred significant controversy by boasting about the comfortable conditions in his South African prison. Banks, who is incarcerated on kidnapping charges at Goodwood Correctional Centre, has become a focal point of public and governmental ire due to his casual display of satisfaction with prison life.

Viral Video and Public Reaction

The incident was first reported by the online news outlet News 24, which detailed Banks’ provocative remarks about the amenities he enjoys for free while in detention. The video shows Banks, dressed in the standard yellow prison uniform, surrounded by other inmates. He cheerfully waves to the camera, addressing his critics with the words, “Hello haters, you thought we would suffer in prison? No, we are doing really well.”

Banks goes on to describe his daily routine, painting a picture of a surprisingly comfortable life behind bars: “This morning we had breakfast, then lunch in the afternoon. We’re about to have dinner. We’re not suffering at all.” He lists free toiletries, rent-free accommodation, and no electricity costs among the perks he enjoys. The video also captures the laughter of his fellow inmates, further emphasizing their apparent well-being.

Official Response

Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, confirmed Banks’ identity and expressed strong disapproval of the video. “He is a Zimbabwean national held at Goodwood Correctional Centre on kidnapping charges. Following a search, a cellphone was confiscated. The Department condemns this behavior and will take strong disciplinary action,” Nxumalo declared.

Nxumalo underscored that mobile phones are considered contraband in correctional facilities and their unauthorized use is a serious offense. He stressed that despite Banks’ optimistic portrayal, life in prison is far from easy.

Broader Implications

The incident has sparked a broader debate about the management of contraband within South African prisons and the public perception of prison conditions. The video has led to a critical examination of the policies and practices in place to prevent such breaches and ensure that the realities of prison life are accurately represented.
