A shocking incident at HMP Wandsworth in London has resulted in a 15-month prison sentence for former officer Linda De Sousa Abreu, 31. She was caught on video engaging in sexual activity with an inmate, sparking outrage and raising serious concerns about prison security and staff conduct.

Incident Details

On June 25, De Sousa Abreu, while on duty, entered an inmate’s cell and engaged in sexual activity that was recorded by another prisoner. The video, lasting nearly five minutes, quickly went viral on social media. Just three days later, on June 28, De Sousa Abreu was arrested at Heathrow Airport as she attempted to flee to Madrid.

Before her arrest, the mother-of-one called the prison to resign, stating she would not be returning to work.

Legal Proceedings

De Sousa Abreu pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office on July 29, 2024. During her sentencing at Isleworth Crown Court, Judge Martin Edmunds KC emphasized the severity of her actions.

“You engaged in sexual activity with a prisoner, compromising your role as an officer,” Judge Edmunds stated. “This misconduct undermines discipline within the prison and puts fellow officers at increased risk.”

The court also heard that De Sousa Abreu had a history of mental health issues and trauma. On the day of the incident, she consented to the sexual activity and allowed another prisoner to film the act. However, she did not consent to the video being shared online, which led to widespread humiliation and damage.

Impact of the Viral Video

The release of the video caused significant harm within the prison and beyond. Female officers at HMP Wandsworth reported experiencing increased harassment and sexual advances from inmates, who viewed them as “fair game” after the incident. Some officers’ children were even teased at school about their mothers’ professions.

Judge Edmunds highlighted the broader implications: “The damage caused at Wandsworth has inevitably spread across the prison system.”

Additional Offences

During the trial, it was revealed that De Sousa Abreu had engaged in additional sexual encounters with the same prisoner on separate occasions. These were also considered during sentencing.

Sentence and Mitigating Factors

De Sousa Abreu was sentenced to 15 months in prison, of which she will serve half in custody and the remainder on licence. She was granted a 95-day reduction in her sentence due to time spent wearing an electronic tag for 190 days.

This case underscores the importance of maintaining professional boundaries within correctional facilities to protect both staff and inmates from misconduct and its far-reaching consequences.
